The benefits
A project is underway to redevelop Newcastle High School by upgrading facilities to meet future demand. The project will deliver:
a new three-storey learning hub with a library, canteen and covered outdoor learning area (COLA), facilities for specialist support classes, general classrooms, hospitality classrooms and science labs
a new multipurpose facility with gymnasium, stage, fitness lab, modern classrooms, outdoor courts and end of trip facilities
a new student hub within existing Building A and student entry from Parkway Avenue.
Key heritage buildings on the school site will also be retained.

Progress summary
- The external cladding including feature aluminium blades, battens and perforated screens has now been successfully completed on the new learning hub and multipurpose facility. The scaffolding has been removed from both buildings and a new school sign installed on the multipurpose facility, facing the Smith Street student entry.
- Internal finishes are progressing well in both buildings, and the sprung timber floor is currently being installed in the multipurpose facility.
- Landscaping and covered walkways for both buildings are progressing well.
Next steps
- We are now in the final stages of construction and are completing the internal finishes, furniture and equipment installation in the learning hub and multipurpose facility. These buildings will be handed over to the school to start moving in during Term 4.
- The landscaping surrounding the learning hub and multipurpose facility will also be finished, as will the covered walkways, the new drop off area for learning support and the public domain works.
- Following handover, we will begin the demolition of the remaining buildings and removing demountables from the school site. The remaining landscaping including the multi-sports courts will be handed over to the school in mid 2026.
