The benefits
A project is underway to redevelop Newcastle High School by upgrading facilities to meet future demand. The project will deliver:
a new three-storey learning hub with a library, canteen and covered outdoor learning area (COLA), facilities for specialist support classes, general classrooms, hospitality classrooms and science labs
a new multipurpose facility with gymnasium, stage, fitness lab, modern classrooms, outdoor courts and end of trip facilities

Progress summary
Structural and foundation works have progressed for both the new learning hub and multipurpose facility.
For the new learning hub, works to pour the concrete slabs for the ground floor are underway and the lift shafts and stair walls are now formed to the first floor.
Ground floor works for the multipurpose facility have also begun, with retaining walls and ground floor slabs to be completed by the end of the year.
The footpaths and paved area near the library have been completed and handed over to the school.
Hoarding has also been set up around a section of Building A in preparation for the internal refurbishment works which will create a new student hub and office space.
Next steps
Structural and foundation works will continue to progress on the new learning hub and multipurpose facility.
Construction will also start on an overhead walkway between Building A and the new learning hub in the coming months.
The switchover to the newly built substation on National Park Street has been rescheduled to January 2025. Any residents affected by the switchover will be notified by Ausgrid.
