As part of the NSW Government's plan to rebuild public education, the NSW Budget is delivering record education funding, including $9 billion for new and upgraded schools. This targeted investment will ensure growing communities get access to a world class public education.

An upgrade to Orange Grove Public School is in planning. It will include additional fit-for-purpose learning spaces and upgrade core facilities to meet enrolment growth. Further updates regarding the Orange Grove Public School upgrade will be released as the project progresses.

The planning application, known as a Review of Environmental Factors (REF), will be on exhibition from Tuesday 14 April 2026 to Monday 4 May 2026.

We are pleased to announce that the construction contract has been awarded to Stephen Edwards Constructions. We are working with Stephen Edwards Construction and the school to finalise designs and arrange a schedule for site establishment to prepare for the start of main works.

The planning application, known as a Review of Environmental Factors (REF), for Orange Grove Public School will be on public exhibition on the NSW Planning Portal for Division 5.1 (Part 5) Activities from Tuesday 14 April 2026 to Monday 4 May 2026.

Detailed plans for the proposed activity are set out in the REF, which can be viewed at edu.nsw.link/OrangeGrove-REF or by scanning the QR code.

Any comments on the proposal may be lodged through the Planning Portal by no later than Monday 4 May 2026.

Next steps

The next steps are to complete site establishment works which include:

delivery and installation of temporary demountable units to house the library, Out Of School Hours (OOSH) care and amenities
erecting fencing and site hoarding around the perimeter of the main works site
setting up site office sheds and facilities for the workers including walkways
establishing temporary power and water supply to the site
submitting the Development Application (DA) to Inner West City Council in April 2026.

Frequently asked questions

How will the usable green space at the school be impacted?

The area of the current usable open green spaces at Orange Grove Public School is 3850 sq metres, once the upgrade is completed and demountable buildings are removed, the school will benefit from an expected 4200 sq metres of usable green spaces. This is an addition of 350 sq metres more usable green space for student and community use.

Can the building locations be swapped around? Can building K be relocated to the centre of the school?

Swapping the proposed location of the buildings is not a viable option given the multiple constraints of the site. From a school operations perspective, the proposed location of the buildings in the revised masterplan will support school functions including student and staff safety, security, pedagogy and other elements needed to create a functional environment for activities such as painting, school assemblies, school performances, canteen operations, outdoor activities and OHSC.

By having the proposed administration building centrally located at the entrance of the school, school staff will have increased visibility of the school grounds and will be able to better manage visitors as they enter the school. This also provides an added layer of security for students, staff and visitors. The proposed location of the school hall allows for visitors attending performances or out of hours events, to enter and exit the school easily without needing to access the school's main areas.

The proposed central location of the school library provides easy access for students and staff. The proposed new open spaces allow for outdoor areas to be used for different play groups and activities. These elements have been welcomed by the school. The organisational model of the school is influenced by pedagogy, activity programming, school administration, teacher resources, student numbers and grouping. Is it possible to have a shade structure to cover the existing basketball courts near Perry Street?

The current masterplan does not include a shade structure over the basketball court on the side near Perry Street. As we begin consultation with council, the school and other technical experts, we will develop a better understanding of what the options are for shade structures, their usefulness and what the locational implications will be.

We will keep the community informed when this information becomes available.
