School Asbestos Management Plans and Registers
The Department of Education is committed to managing asbestos containing materials within our schools and other department-owned facilities to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and community.
The new Asbestos Management Plan (AMP) provides transparency and consistency in how asbestos is managed, aiming to eliminate exposure to asbestos through identification and removal where safe to do so. It outlines strategies and procedures for identifying, assessing and managing asbestos containing material (ACM) within all schools to minimise the risk of exposure to staff, students and the school community.
Consistent with our goal to address workload pressures for teachers and school leadership, the new AMP and supporting documents are designed to save time and make it easier to ensure the safety and wellbeing of school communities. It is quicker to read, understand, and implement.
The following supporting documents complete the suite of asbestos management documents. The new approach includes 3 overarching procedures to guide a consistent and compliant methodology to manage asbestos.
- Asbestos management procedure
- Asbestos incident management procedure
- Asbestos in or on grounds guide
School asbestos management plan (SAMP) and asbestos register
Each SAMP includes the asbestos register which contains information about the existence and location of any known or presumed asbestos-containing materials on school sites, including in or on grounds. Previous information from the Site-Specific Asbestos Management Plans (SSAMPs) have has now been incorporated into these documents.
The SAMP will be the school’s single source of truth and can be accessed via this page, AMS or FMWeb2.0. The school asbestos management plans are updated daily to capture any changes that are made to the asbestos register. This happens automatically whenever a panel hygienist makes an amendment within the system.
Impact on major capital works, minor works and maintenance projects
Planning for major capital works, minor works and maintenance projects remains the same. Project managers are always encouraged to use panel hygienists off the Schedule of Rates Contract. This ensures updates to the asbestos register occur. Only panel hygienists can update the asbestos register.
School Infrastructure staff can view the Hygienist panel info sheet to identify and engage an approved panel hygienist.
Information for principals and workplace managers
How asbestos is managed on school and department sites remains the same.
Please find a quick guide for principals & workplace managers here.
Impact on Health, Safety and Staff Wellbeing
The role of HSSW remains the same. The documents clarify which incidents HSSW need to notify to SafeWork NSW.
Previous asbestos registers and SSAMPs
If you have a printed version of asbestos registers or SSAMPs please discard them. Existing SSAMPs will be made obsolete and are no longer required. Printed versions of any of these documents are not advised as they are constantly updated. Asbestos registers, and now asbestos on ground information, should always be accessed from the SI website, AMS, or FMWeb 2.0.
Old copies of the SSAMPs will remain in AMS as our information repository should you ever need historic versions.
