Brewarrina Central School

Brewarrina Central School is located in Brewarrina, a small rural town in far western New South Wales. The school draws its enrolment from the immediate township and settlements. A small number of children travel 50 kilometres by bus from Gongolgon each day. The majority of the student population (97%) identifies as Aboriginal. The school enjoys strong community support and works closely with the Aboriginal Education Consultative Group and Community Working Party. The school has a strong emphasis on Aboriginal education and cultural awareness. It recently introduced a Stage 4 LOTE course in the Ngemba language. Brewarrina Central School offers a broad curriculum, Kindergarten to Year 12 and strives to provide a comprehensive education for all students. Literacy, numeracy, technology and improving attendance and retention have been major focus areas this year. Because of its geographical isolation and the low socio-economic background of many of its students we are able to access support from a variety of programs including the Country Areas Program, Priority Schools Program and Priority Action Schools Program.
