Scone High School

Scone High School is a small, rural, comprehensive, co-educational Years 7-12 school which prides itself on its consistent academic and Higher School Certificate results. We provide a diverse curriculum and a wide variety of opportunities for all students to succeed in their areas of interest - including dance, drama, music, visual arts, sport and agriculture from Year 7 through to Year 12. The school offers Extension courses for senior students in English, History and Mathematics, along with extensive Science courses including Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Agriculture and Investigating Science, PD/H/PE, Community & Family Studies, Design & Technology, Industrial Technology, every year. A wide variety of curriculum options means that students can study at Scone High School and not have to travel or move away from their families to study. The school is the lead school the Upper Hunter Trade Training Centre - a joint project between Merriwa Central, Muswellbrook High, Scone Grammar and Scone High Schools, along with Hunter Institute of TAFE. A wide variety of VET courses are available to students as a result of this innovative partnership. This centre has been operational since mid 2011. Scone High School is proud to be a Visible Wellbeing school and is a member of Positive Education Schools Australia (PESA) and is an integral partner with the "where There's a Will" foundation, using our character strengths to improve the wellbeing of the Upper Hunter. Students have many opportunities to participate in sport at recreational, local, regional, state and national levels. We have a successful horse sports team that participates at a high level. At Scone High School we provide a wide range of opportunties for students to ensure that they are exposed to activities that thier city counterparts have easy access to. We have an extensive excursion program for students to choose from, including overseas excursions. We are committed to enriching student learning by taking them to places where they see their learning applied in real life situations so that learning is relevant to thier lives. Scone High School is a Centre of Excellence in Agriculture. The Steer Show Team has been performing at a particularly high level. Participation at the local level through to the Royal Easter Show has earned the school the reputation as one of the finest in the state in Agriculture. The school has gained ribbons and championships at every Royal Easter Show for the past 28 years. It also participates in the Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza each November, winning the Waverly School Steer Competition in 2016. It also assists the partner primary schools in preparation of thier steers. This leadership experience for the students develops a wide range of skills across the schools. The school is committed to developing students who contribute positively to their community. The concept of community involvement is promoted through providing opportunites for stduents to be involved in both school based and community activities. The school operates an extensive leadership progra, designed by students for students and the program is enthusuastically supported by the community. Our close relationship with our partner primary school has resulted in students designing a leadership porgam for secondary students who deliver it to Year 5 students from all of our partner schools, as well as a best practice transition program for students moving from primary into high school. The student representative Council is an active body which promotes leadership and school community involvement. They particpate in the school's tri annial strategic planning and run annual management planning workshops for students. They have participated in Clean Up Australia day, fundraising for the Devil's Ark Project, Footy Colours Day, Shave for a Cure, Fashions on the Filed on Melbourne Cup Day and provide a Christmas gift to every elderly person in the Starthearn Village each year. Scone High School has five student representatives on the Upper Hunter Shire Youth Council which feeds directly into the shire's Youth Services Committee. This exciting initiative enables young people to contribute to the development of local ideas and facilities to enhance the lives of youth across the shire. They have been instrumental in applying for a number of grants to support activities that provide young people especially in the arts.  Scone High School enjoys very positive and highly productive relationships with it's partner primary schools. These school include: Scone Public School (PS), Aberdeen PS, Rouchel PS, Murrurundi PS, Ellerston PS, Blandford PS and Belltrees PS. We are all currently working together on a student engagement project which focusses on providing teaching and learning opportunties that engage students to enahnce their opportunties of success.
