St Ives High School

St Ives High School, established in 1964, is located on Sydney's upper north shore. The school's motto, 'Optima Optime', loosely translates to 'the best things in the best possible ways', and underpins the school's operation. The school emphasises the development of a well-rounded individual through an innovative curriculum, with leading edge technology, discovering, nurturing and developing student potential. The school has a well-deserved reputation for academic and sporting excellence and is consistently a high performing comprehensive high school, which is evidenced in NAPLAN, School Certificate and HSC results that are demonstrably above State average in all areas. Our Gifted and Talented Program was one of the first established in the state. It is highly regarded with many applicants sitting an entrance exam each year. Within our academic curriculum, students are offered a wide range of subjects across all key-learning areas. Our teaching and support staff's expertise is regularly called upon for School Certificate and Higher School Certificate marking, curriculum advice and regional workshops. Excellent technology resources, including 22 interactive whiteboards, DER laptop program and wireless computer network, support quality learning. Students at St Ives High School are encouraged to be actively engaged within the wider school community and are constantly provided with opportunities for learning outside the classroom. In 2010, these included overseas excursions to Japan, London and Paris. In 2011, students will travel to China to participate in educational programs. Extra-curricular activities include the school's highly successful Performing Arts Unit with classes in musical theatre, dance and drama, and a band program that includes instrument tuition. The school plays a unique role in the community. St Ives High enjoys close and productive relationships with local Primary schools through our community of schools activities. A committed Parents and Citizens Association and Student Representative Council work with staff to support the school. The school's special programs and facilities add to its uniqueness. A Hearing Support Unit caters for 18 hearing-impaired students who are supported in both individualised programs and in mainstream classrooms with aides. International students add diversity to our multicultural community. The school has extensive sporting and playing fields and in 2011 new commercial kitchens will enhance student learning. At St Ives High School, teachers and students develop positive relationships which support student learning. Our welfare system promotes self-discipline, tolerance, acceptance and fairness in a safe, secure and happy environment. At St Ives High School, choices create infinite possibilities for our students.
