Gorokan Public School
Gorokan Public School strives to provide the highest educational opportunity for its students in a safe and respectful learning environment. Located in Dudley Street Gorokan in the Wyong Shire of NSW, the school has a current enrolment of 600 students of which 18% are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) descent, and 5% from language backgrounds other than English. The school's motto Learn to Live underpins the diverse opportunities that the school offers. The students are provided with modern facilities and resources to enhance the learning process. The school services a diverse community and is supported by equity funding. Gorokan Public School is an Early Action for Success and Bump it Up targeted initiative school and is committed towards maximising the potential of all students through the provision of innovative, quality educational programs which aim to promote a culture of learning excellence and responsiveness. Students are provided with individualised learning opportunities through the differentiation of curriculum delivery. Enrichment and remediation programs support students to access the curriculum at their own level of need. The school also offers many engaging extracurricular opportunities for its students in sport, cultural and creative arts arenas. Gorokan Public School has a strong focus on technology for learning and is well resourced in this area. Each classroom has internet access, an interactive whiteboard / LED touchscreen TV, tablets and computers. The school also has a designated computer lab which has video conferencing facilities where students participate in virtual excursions and technology lessons. Students are able to access portable computer labs for in class learning. The students are taught to be digitally responsible citizens. The school strives to enforce an ethos of safe, respectful learners through the implementation of the You Can Do It program which is implemented in all classes. Students are encouraged to be the best that they can be and all positive efforts are reinforced. The school plays an important role in the community through its School as Community Centre (SACC). This service supports families with children from birth to eight years. It works in partnership with other local agencies to provide a range of services to the local community. The SACC aims to be a connection between families, organisations, and the school. Students and their families are able to access a range of support personnel which include a School Counsellor, Chaplain, Community Liaison Officer, Aboriginal Education Officer and the School Learning Support Team. Dedicated staff work diligently to promote partnerships between home and school. Parents, caregivers and community members are welcome at the school and actively participate in decision-making through regular attendance at P&C meetings. The school has a strong and demonstrated belief that the partnership between home and school is critical in making a difference to maximising learning outcomes and engaging students in their education. Gorokan Public School works collaboratively with the Muru Bulbi AECG and the Wallarah Learning Alliance of primary and secondary schools.
