Berinba Public School

Berinba Public School is a vibrant school which provides a broad curriculum for K to 6 students from the diverse rural community in and around Yass. Being respectful, responsible and safe are our core values and they underpin the school's programs in curriculum and student well-being. The school's priorities include the engagement of teachers and students in quality teaching and learning, the implementation of positive and proactive student welfare programs and the development of a comprehensive school curriculum which is aligned with the Australian Curriculum. Berinba Public School's inclusion in the Burrinjuck Learning Community has delivered a strong and sustainable public school focus on providing a quality education for students in the Yass area. Students benefit from the continuation of our combined curriculum focus and expertise as well as experience the consistency of student welfare programs underpinned by similar core values. The school has provided extensive training of all staff in teaching reading, writing and spelling strategies. Specific programs in literacy and numeracy have led to strong growth in students' learning in literacy and numeracy from Years 3 to 5. Our Kindergarten to Year 2 teachers implement an intensive literacy program called L3 (Literacy, learning and Language). This has led to significant growth of students in reading and writing. The Reading Recovery Program is offered in Year 1 and fosters long term improvement for students who require additional assistance in reading. In addition, the Count Me In Too Program provides a strong foundation in early numeration concepts for students. Through the National Partnerships Program the school has implemented MiniLit, MultiLit and Focus on Reading. The Positive Behaviour For Success Program has ensured that students have a clear understanding of how to enact school values in their everyday school life. As a result classes are calm and strongly focused on learning. The school's creative arts programs are supported by highly experienced teachers. In 2014 the school's drama, dance and choir groups presented a MAD evening for the school community. The school choir was also selected to perform in the Schools Spectacular in Sydney during November. Our School Learning Support Program offers programs in both remediation and gifted and talented programs in writing, reading and mathematics. Berinba Public School is inclusive and provides a secure, safe and productive learning environment for a number of students with special needs. The school has three enriched learning classes which further enhance the learning of these students. Students actively participate in sporting programs which include fundamental movement and gymnastics, intensive swimming, cross country, athletics and major and minor games. The school has greatly benefited through the recent BER building program. Two new classrooms, a new bus shelter and a new shelter over the K-2 play area were provided through the program. The school playground has undergone a major refurbishment through funding acquired through the Local Schools Working Together Program. This project included the construction of a 60 by 80 metre synthetically turfed playground, the erection of a grandstand and lighting for public night use of facilities.
