Shortland Public School
Shortland Public School is situated on the western fringe of Newcastle. It is close to the University of Newcastle and the Shortland Wetlands Environmental Education centre, both of which have close educational links with the school. Shortland Public School is an innovative, unique and dynamic school which provides opportunities for the entire learning community in a vibrant and nurturing environment. All members of the school community have a role in the development of a school culture of continuous improvement through participation in discussion, planning and evaluation activities. Shortland Public School is a member of the Callaghan Education Pathways. Regional Emotional Disturbance, Multi-Categorical and Autistic classes are at Shortland Public School. Shortland is supported by equtiy funding which allows for the formation of small groups in both literacy and numeracy and the employment of a CLO. DiPL literacy groups operate every day as well as Accelerated Literacy lessons. Shortland has an ESL support teacher who provides a targeted multicultural program. Shortland has strong support programs as well as specific programs for its gifted students. The staff at Shortland are focussed and dedicated to the improvement of outcomes for all students. There is a specialist aerobics and ensemble program as well as exceptional art and environmental programs. Technology is a focus across all areas of the curriculum. Shortland PS participates in the Positive Behaviours for Learning program to support our Code of Conduct centring on 'Respect, Responsibility and Relationships'. Active After Schools, and also access to OOSH, are other features of the broad and varied opportunities available.
