Lockhart Central School

Lockhart Central School, established in 1897, is a K to 12 school located in the rural community of Lockhart. It is the only school in the Lockhart Shire which offers the HSC and draws students from the Lockhart village and the surrounding areas. Lockhart Central School's mission is to develop independent learners in a caring K to 12 environment. The school works in a collaborative manner in providing an educational environment leading to stimulating learning experiences. Values of Lockhart Central School are to provide opportunities through a positive learning environment which encourages and challenges students to reach their potential. We encourage high standards of behaviour, integrity, honesty, commitment and respect of others. We aim to have responsible citizens who recognise right from wrong and who are independent, self-reliant and organised. Our goals are to have students who are literate, numerate, interested in learning and capable and innovative in the use of technology. We strive to have students who are environmentally and socially aware and have a knowledge of the wider world, and to have students who are effective communicators, critical thinkers and happy and confident members of the wider community. The school has close links with our partner primary schools, Charles Sturt University and the Riverina Institute of TAFE, and enjoys excellent support from the wider community of Lockhart and the Riverina. Positive Behaviour for Learning is a school focus; Positive Behaviour support is an application of a behaviourally-based systems approach to enhance the capacity of schools, to design effective environments that improve the link between research validated practices and schools. Attention is focused on creating and sustaining school-wide, classroom, and individual systems of support that improve outcomes for all students by decreasing targeted and increasing positive behaviours. Quality teaching and building leadership capacity throughout the school community are significant aspects in our school improvement plan. The school's special programs include, Working Out What Works (an individual reading intervention program), Focus on Reading (a whole school approach to comprehension), a work education program incorporating service learning and the NSW Premier's Student Volunteering awards, Team Leadership for School Improvement, Ipod Touch in the Classroom, Storytime - a 0-5 year old reading program, a highly effective learning support team, innovative sporting programs for our students with disabilities, student leadership and peer mentoring. The school achieves its vision by continually improving the learning outcomes for students and by developing a broad, quality curriculum which focuses on literacy, numeracy and technology. We are a great school with great staff and students.
