Gillieston Public School

Gillieston Public School is situated 5kms west of Maitland in the Hunter Valley, set in a semi-rural environment, within the Wonnarua Nation. We are surrounded by many developing housing estates such as Saddlers Ridge, Gillieston Grove, Wallis Creek, Darcy's Peak and Cliftleigh, as well as the older, well-established area of Gillieston Heights and the water views of Wentworth Wetlands. We enjoy strong ties with the community and engage in a learning community with other schools, including our partner high school, Rutherford Technology High. Families and friends of the school all make valuable contributions to our educational, social and cultural programs. The students of Gillieston Public School are offered a wide range of opportunities and activities in academic, cultural, sporting and environmental areas that contribute to the positive development of the whole child.

New school: Gillieston Public School redevelopment

As part of the NSW Government's plan to rebuild essential services, the 2023-24 Budget is delivering a record $8.8 billion for new and upgraded schools. This targeted investment in growing communities will ensure working families get access to a world class public education. A project is underway to redevelop Gillieston Public School by replacing the demountables on the existing site with modern classrooms and ancillary spaces. Further updates regarding the Gillieston Public School redevelopment will be released as the project progresses.

New public preschool: New public preschool at Gillieston School

The NSW Government's 2023-24 Budget is delivering a record $8.8 billion for new and upgraded schools. This targeted investment in growing communities will ensure working families get access to a world class public education. As part of the plan to rebuild essential services, the NSW Government has invested $769 million to deliver 100 new public preschools, including building a new preschool at every new government primary school in NSW, to boost access to preschool across the state. The location of the public preschools have been selected based on careful evaluation and selection criteria with considerations to educational need and demand, how children grow and learn, infrastructure feasibility, and insights gained through consultation. Early planning is underway to consider the needs of the local area now and into the future to ensure the right preschool is designed for the community. Consultants have been engaged and site due diligence activities are underway. Maintenance

To ensure the safety, reliability and longevity of our schools, every school across NSW receives maintenance. The Department undertakes preventative and routine maintenance every year, and repairs as needed. The Department also reviews the planned maintenance program for each school every year and reviews those items that are predicted to require work to help prolong the life of the school buildings and facilities.

Demountables

Demountables have been part of the NSW education system for many decades and will continue to be used across the state. Demountable classrooms are modern, air-conditioned rooms that provide students and teaching staff with excellent quality facilities. The learning spaces have the same range of technology that is available in permanent spaces. We review school accommodation needs each year, looking at changing enrolment patterns and other factors to prepare for the upcoming school year. This helps to identify schools that need new demountables and schools where they can removed. Most demountable movement takes place between October and February and we report our annual demountable statistics each April. Additional demountable installations can occur outside this window to support capital works and maintenance projects in schools or emergency responses to natural disasters.
