School facilities are unsupervised. Children should be supervised by an adult at all times.

Prior to visiting the school, refer to the Interactive Map to find the nominated Share Our Space gate and to confirm that the school is open to the community, as participation days and times can change. 

There should also be a Share Our Space sign next to the gate to make it clear where to enter the school.

During Share Our Space, school toilets will not be open.

Members of the community who use the school’s outdoor facilities during Share Our Space are expected to take all reasonable precautions for their own safety and wellbeing. Children are expected to be supervised by adults.

If a member of the community is injured at a school site during Share Our Space, legal liability will be dependent on various factors. Claims arising from an injury to a member of the community will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Not all injuries may give rise to legal liability and in some instances, the entity liable may not be the Department of Education.

School canteens will not be open, so please bring food and water with you, if required.

Yes, schools are cleaned regularly during term time and holidays.

If you would like to nominate a school for participation, please submit the community request form.

We work with stakeholders across the Department of Education to determine which schools are best suited for Share Our Space. This involves consideration of issues such as vacation care and planned site works. We also work with local councils to identify areas most in need of open space, playgrounds, and sports fields.

Where green space or sporting areas are in short supply, and where communities most need safe and accessible leisure spaces, schools have been placed on the program.

The outdoor facilities at Share Our Space schools are open over a variety of days and times, depending on the current community use of each school site and factors such as vacation care.

Generally, opening hours for Share our Space are:

If the nominated school gate has a lock, a security guard will unlock and lock school gates.

No guards will be arranged for schools without locks on gates or without fences.

If you notice hazardous material/s (eg  needles, dog poo and used medical supplies) please report this to our Central Services team via 1300 880 021 and this will be managed by Department staff.

Pets and animals are not permitted on NSW Department of Education land (except for companion animals.)
