Spin into action: Share Our Space, Transport for NSW, and AusCycling hold free bike skills courses

Share Our Space teamed up with Transport for NSW and AusCycling to offer free two hour bike skills courses for children aged 8-12 during the Spring 2024 school holidays. Funded by Transport for NSW as part of the Get Kids Active Program, the courses promote bike riding as a viable mode of travel to and from school.

Active kids are happy, healthy and curious kids. Moving more and spending time outdoors helps growing kids to stay happy, healthy and switched on at school. Walking or riding together also helps parents and carers talk about road safety, reduce traffic congestion and is a greener choice for families and communities. The program is investing in infrastructure in neighbourhoods, amenities in school grounds, and education and behaviour change such as the rider skills courses.

AusCycling held 36 sessions across 18 schools in metro, regional, and rural NSW, to help young riders develop essential bike riding skills. Qualified instructors led each session, covering topics such as helmet fitting, equipment checks, foundational riding techniques, and road safety basics.

Alison, a parent whose child attended a session at Huskisson Public School, shared positive feedback: “The kids enjoyed the program and gained confidence to cycle safely. They met new people and had a great day!”

Share Our Space is thrilled to partner with a program that provides children with valuable bike riding skills that foster safer, more independent journeys in their communities and we look forward to running more sessions as part of Share Our Space in 2025.
