Aurora College

Aurora College, New South Wales' first virtual school, commenced classes on Monday 2 February 2015. The school aims to provide innovative, flexible learning in a whole new context, by allowing students in rural and remote communities to connect locally and learn globally. Aurora offers a mix of online and residential school classes. Students connect with their teachers and classmates in timetabled lessons through a state-of-the-art virtual learning environment, which comprises web conferencing software, a learning management system, and a range of online communication and collaboration tools. Aurora offers selective classes in English, Mathematics and Science to gifted and talented Year 7-10 students from rural and remote areas across NSW. Stage 4 students are chosen in the same way as students in all other selective classes in NSW government schools. The college also gives Stage 6 government high school students in rural and remote communities the opportunity to study subjects not available in their own school. Aurora College offers students expanded career options through innovative partnerships with business and with scientific, cultural and tertiary education institutions. Mentoring opportunities and master classes are key features of both the online and residential school programs, giving students access to people who are leaders in their chosen field. Maintenance

To ensure the safety, reliability and longevity of our schools, every school across NSW receives maintenance. The Department undertakes preventative and routine maintenance every year, and repairs as needed. The Department also reviews the planned maintenance program for each school every year and reviews those items that are predicted to require work to help prolong the life of the school buildings and facilities.

Demountables

Demountables have been part of the NSW education system for many decades and will continue to be used across the state. Demountable classrooms are modern, air-conditioned rooms that provide students and teaching staff with excellent quality facilities. The learning spaces have the same range of technology that is available in permanent spaces. We review school accommodation needs each year, looking at changing enrolment patterns and other factors to prepare for the upcoming school year. This helps to identify schools that need new demountables and schools where they can removed. Most demountable movement takes place between October and February and we report our annual demountable statistics each April. Additional demountable installations can occur outside this window to support capital works and maintenance projects in schools or emergency responses to natural disasters.
