Fort Street High School

Fort Street is acknowledged for continued academic excellence, tolerance, liberalism, a broad education, social and political awareness and responsibility. We acknowledge students as individuals and promote a sense of community and respect for all. There is a strong sense of tradition and history, broad academic curriculum and co-curricular program. The school commenced in 1849 and is the oldest academically selective school in NSW. In 1974 it became co-educational on the current site at Taverners Hill, Petersham. The sesqui-centenary was celebrated in 1999. The school values its diverse population from over 100 suburbs in Sydney. Of the approximately 930 students 500 speak languages other than English. Our school continues to be proud of outstanding academic results with 95% of students each year proceeding to the university of their choice immediately after the HSC. Students' results place them regularly in the top ten positions in the state in a range of subjects. These students are offered prestigious university scholarships. Current students aspire to make positive contributions to Australian society and are nurtured by famous Fortians including The Hon Michael Kirby and Dr John Yu.
