This school’s intake area is changing
As communities grow and change, the department sometimes needs to adjust local enrolment intake areas.
With the completion of significant, state of the art upgrades to Newcastle High School, the intake area of Merewether Heights Public School will be transitioned to become a full feeder to the new facilities at Newcastle High School.
These changes help keep enrolments balanced across all high schools to ensure every student can access high-quality public education in well-resourced, supportive learning environments.
The intake area is changing for new enrolments from Week 9 of Term 1, 2026 (week commencing 23 March 2026).
The new intake area is viewable via School Finder.
Enrolment Arrangements
A transition period will be in place for affected families for the 2026, 2027 and 2028 school years. During this transition period of three years, families in the identified areas of change will be considered local to both Newcastle High School and Kotara High School with the option to enrol at either school. This arrangement will conclude on 31 December 2028 for the following year 7 cohorts, making all students local to Newcastle High School at that time.
Following the immediate 2026 transition, Kotara High School will continue to give prioritisation to non-local applications for students who have attended Merewether Heights Public School.
For families who:
- are living in the identified area of change
- have any students enrolled in Merewether Heights Public School in the 2026 school year (any grade)
- would prefer to enrol at Kotara High School
Please submit an Expression Of Interest for Kotara High School when Year 7 preferences open for your relevant school year. You will be prioritised for non-local enrolment.
I have a child already attending this school. Can they stay there if I am now in a different school’s intake area?
Yes, they can. There is no change for students already attending Kotara High School.
I have a child already attending this school. Can I enrol their sibling/s at the same school?
Siblings of currently enrolled students at Kotara High School will be assessed under the department’s enrolment policy.
How are new intake areas developed?
Many factors are considered to inform the development of new enrolment intake areas. For example:
- enrolment trends
- opportunities to align with primary school local intake areas
- public transport access
- the size and utilisation rate of schools
- the number of students living in each proposed intake area
- and the physical capacity of schools to enrol students.
