Woodberry Learning Centre
Woodberry Learning Centre (WLC) is a NSW Department of Education school that was established in 2007. It is a School for Specific Purposes (SSP) meeting the complex educational needs of students in Years 5-8 who have struggled to maintain engagement with their curriculum in a mainstream setting due to challenging behaviours, mental ill health, and / or complex trauma. Our academic program is based strongly around individulaised literacy and numeracy support. Our student wellbeing framework is based on the four pillars of the Berry Street Education Model, Trauma Informed Practice, Choice Theory and the NeuroSequential Model in Education. We have a very strong Aboriginal Education program supported by community and local Elders, and maintain a productive relationship with the Maitland Local AECG. The school has 3 BD (Behaviour Difficulty) classes for students between Years 5-8, and in 2025 will add 2 ED (Emotional Disturbance) classes for students in Years 7 and 8. Students in the BD classes complete a 40 week (one school year) placement before returning to their base school or moving on to another supported setting. Students in the ED classes have an ongoing placement.
