G S Kidd Memorial School

G S Kidd SSP caters for students from Kindergarten to Year 12 who are assessed as functioning in the moderate to severe range of intellectual disability, and provides NSW Board of Studies K - 12 Curriculum. Our focus is on quality teaching and learning in a place where the dignity and self-worth of each student is of utmost importance. The unique rotational teaching model increases access and participation for students while effectively utilising the expertise of staff to deliver quality lesson content. The partnership between supportive parents, therapists, school personnel and dedicated volunteers enhances the outcomes for all students in a stimulating environment. Individual programs are specifically designed and implemented, then generalised into community-based learning. Integration programs provide opportunities for students to practise social, communication and relevant curriculum skills with peers from our neighbouring schools. The school also values the support from neighbouring students who volunteer on a regular basis to provide one on one assistance in formal classroom programs as well as during playground activities. The school provides a successful transition to work programs for secondary aged students which is thoroughly supported by local community service providers. The school places a great emphasis on optimising the health of all students through our PDHPE programs, which involve students in a great variety of activities. These include: bike riding with regular and adapted bikes as a tool for fitness, fun and transport; hydrotherapy and swimming programs both in the school pool and the local town pool; all students as members of the local PCYC, providing access to basketball, squash, volleyball and racquet ball; and the continued involvement in the Active After School program each term which are fun, safe and inclusive sporting activities. The productive vegetable garden enhances the Living Skills program and allows students to experience the entire process of garden to table lessons. Valuable excursions, both local and overnight, are well planned to effectively support the curriculum learning as well as enhancing the skills and safe living practices that are rehearsed in the school setting.
