Awabakal Environmental Education Centre

Wetlands Environment Education Centre is located at the Hunter Wetlands Centre, a 45 hectare complex of restored and natural wetlands designated as part of the Hunter Estuary Wetlands and listed as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. This adds a national and international aspect to the excursion program. WEECs excursion programs are heavily focused on wetlands, their flora and fauna and the ecosystem services they provide. The centre provides a wide range of fieldwork resources and programs that allow students to investigate wetlands first-hand. Topics include wetland animals and plants, wet and dry environments, wetlands and water quality, wetlands and rivers, wetland ecosystem services and sustainable management of wetlands. WEEC also provides specialised information on wetlands at a national level. WEEC has a wide network of national and international contacts and direct links with the Ramsar Convention. These connections result in significant enhancement of programs for students. WEEC administers the HCC Regional Environmental Working Group in collaboration with Rumbalara RRC. WEEC has contributed to the NSW Sustainable Schools program since 2002.
