Westlawn Public School
Westlawn is an excellent public school which serves the Grafton community on the North Coast of NSW. We focus on providing excellence and opportunity within a vibrant and caring school community with a balance of tradition and innovation. Our school is large enough to provide a diverse range of educational programs and opportunities yet small enough to cater for the individual needs of students while maintaining a friendly, family atmosphere. We are enormously proud of the strong reputation our school has for providing an attractive, quality learning environment in which our students thrive in academic, sporting, social and cultural areas. All students at Westlawn PS are challenged to achieve to the highest standards, particularly in literacy and numeracy, with all classes catering for gifted and talented students. Many opportunities for enrichment are provided including the school band, school choirs, academic competitions, concerts, excursions, sporting representation, leadership, technology, and engaging learning experiences across the school. Our teachers are highly qualified, sensitive and caring, and are continuously upgrading their teaching skills to enhance the learning programs we offer our students. Specialist teachers and a School Counsellor can assist students experiencing learning difficulties. The school boasts extensive technological resources including interactive whiteboards and computers in all classrooms and the library, and an additional computer room with 32 computers. Westlawn PS has strong student welfare policies which assist children to learn the values of respect, responsibility, honesty, tolerance and cooperation. Children are encouraged to make appropriate choices and to understand that there are consequences for the choices made. Effective policies are implemented to prevent and respond to bullying and to teach resilience to all students. The atmosphere in our school playground is friendly and happy. Our incoming Kindergarten students benefit from Orientation Days and having Year 6 buddies help them settle into the 'big school' setting. New students are buddied with classmates to help them form friendships and feel welcome. Our Peer Support Program creates supportive networks among students and builds leadership skills in senior students. Our aim is for all families to enjoy their association with our school. We have a well-supported and active P&C. We welcome parents and community members to be actively involved in our school programs, to assist in classrooms and the canteen, and to enjoy social events organised by the P&C. We value parental support and see education as a partnership between the home and the school as we work together to 'strive to achieve' the best possible outcomes for our children. Before and After School Care and Vacation Care are available on the school site. This is a great asset for working parents and busy families.
