Callala Public School serves several small coastal communities of Callala Bay, Callala Beach, Currarong and Myola with its hub around Callala Bay within Jervis Bay on the South Coast of NSW. The school's academic achievements are reflected in a range of programs catering to students' individual and special interests from art, dance, singing, sporting opportunities to accelerated learning programs. We deliver a well-balanced curriculum by experienced, professional and caring staff in well-resourced and modern settings. The school has approximately 180 students in 7 classes. The school works in close partnership with parents, carers and the wider community to enhance the educational opportunities for all students. The school has a strong emphasis on Wellbeing with a heightened awareness of, and commitment to, personalised and differentiated learning and support for every student to succeed. The school encourages students to "Learn with Pride" and implements a school-wide Positive Behaviour for Learning system encouraging the school values of Respect, Responsibility and Participation. Literacy is delivered through various, teaching approaches including, L3, Accelerated Literacy, 7 Steps to Writing Success and Sound Waves. In Kinder and Year 1, teachers use programs including, L3, which focuses on individual assessment and teaches at the point of need for each student. In Years 3 – 6, teachers use programs including Accelerated Literacy to deepen comprehension and develop improved writing through a structured teaching sequence which scaffolds and supports students as they work on age appropriate literature. Sound Waves is used as a school-wide spelling resource to increase skills in a systematic, explicit approach to teaching spelling. The school has a strong tradition in Creative & Practical Arts. The Wakakirri dance team that has proudly competed in the Wakakirri Story Dance Competition for the last three years and was successful in winning the South Coast competition in 2017. In 2015, the 'Schools Rock' program commenced which involves all students. Kinder – Year 2 students learn about the elements of music through percussion while students in Years 3 – 6 learn an instrument each year, culminating in Year 6 students forming rock bands and performing at the Year 6 graduation ceremony at the end of each year to showcase their skills and talents. Callala School runs a diverse range of activities to engage students including the annual Intensive Swimming Scheme and a complementary school developed swimming program, annual Athletics, Swimming and Cross-country Carnivals as well as soccer, rugby league, netball and AFL teams. Stage 3 students enjoy a sailing program thanks to the active and capable members of the Callala Sailing Club. The whole school also participates in the Premiers Sporting Challenge. Gymnastics is also offered for all students in conjunction with the regular PE curriculum. All classes have Interactive Whiteboards and Information and Communication Technologies are utilised extensively in teaching and learning programs. Our school is attractive, modern, well-resourced and is set in beautiful grounds. STEAM is a major focus within the 2018-2020 School Plan with a focus on resourcing and building student’s opportunities and capabilities in these areas. Bushland surrounds, shady outdoor play areas and visits by local wildlife further enrich the quality education that we provide.
