Franklin Public School

Franklin Public School is set in the heart of Tumut's fastest growing family district. We focus on quality literacy, mathematics, science, history and wellbeing ensuring our students are establishing the foundations of their life-long learning journey. While our special STEM program is a relatively new and a highly successful innovation, English literature and literacy has long been emphasised at our school, which is named after one of Australia's most celebrated female authors, Miles Franklin. Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin was born at Talbingo and as a child lived in the Brindabella Ranges. Miss Franklin's life story inspires our young writers year after year as they aim for the medallion and certificates presented in our Miles Franklin Literacy Awards.  They learn about a talented woman who was forced to change her name and pretend to be a man, in order to have her work published. However, her story has a broader message for our students which leads to consideration of unfair gender biases from the past and present day. Her story also inspires and encourages students to persevere and achieve their goals. Academic Results- In recent years we have invested heavily in literacy and numeracy in our junior classes. Franklin School has an Instructional Leader who mentors, supports and co-ordinates quality programs in the foundation years. We are aiming high in our teaching practices and setting high expectations for our students' learning. The significant development underway in the junior years is having a positive effect across the whole school. We welcome any enquiries about the changes that are underway, which are putting our staff at the forefront of professional development in the region. Science programs- One of many whole-school innovations has been the introduction of dedicated Science classes and equipment for our student, in line with the Australian Curriculum.  Research and experimentation are part of the science instruction process and we have seen a shift in the way our students think about problems as a result.  Building Numeracy Leadership has been a school focus. Staff have undertaken professional learning to develop a  whole school drive in establishing numeration , problem solving and inquiry learning in all classrooms. All staff at Franklin have a strong focus in delivering quality engaging learning opportunities for all students. BNL in all classrooms is focuses on developing strategies to strengthen students' learning experiences. Resourcefulness is one such strategy we are developing. Franklin students are prepared to try new approaches and, if they don't succeed at first,  try again and learn from past experiences.  Our students are encouraged to take risks and to extend beyond their comfort zones – the more we support this approach, the more our students find they really can achieve. Teamwork- While individual achievements are important and recognised regularly at our assemblies, we believe teamwork and co-operation are skills for life and Franklin Public School students are constantly offered opportunities to learn and reinforce these skills. Our physical activity program focuses on teams and caters for diverse interests and abilities. For example:the development officer from the popular Tumut Blues Rugby League club will be working with us from 2016 to teach skillsin 2016 we will also be part of the International Tennis Club of Australia's Ken Rosewall Regional Project, presented by the Kids Tennis Foundation, which promotes teamwork and fun physical activity, brings its highly enjoyable programs to our school.Footsteps dance program is utilised to build dance skills across the school , with specialist staff engaging students in dance routines and performance skills. Our schools welcomes the oppertunity to take to the stage every couple of years to showcase our students performace talent. These school based performances bring to the stage singing, dancing, drama, music, filmaking amd teamwork. Excursions and incursions- Living in a regional centre such as Tumut has many benefits for our students and their families.  Our extensive excursion program ensures students learn about their region but also travel beyond this district and see sights that they might not be exposed to. Every year groups of students set off for destinations such as Canberra, Mogo, Ballarat and Milson Island, bringing back rich learning experiences and a camaraderie that can last a lifetime. Family-friendly- Most of all, our school is welcoming to families.  Parents new to the school often remark on how easy it is to get the information they need to enrol their children and settle them into new classes.  We have an active Parents and Citizens group and many other opportunities for family members to attend the school, support their children and see firsthand the innovative learning and teaching that is part of our daily schedule. The very best way to learn more about Franklin Public School is to call or email us to arrange a personal guided tour.  If you are moving to Tumut from interstate or overseas and cannot attend in person, we are happy to help you out with additional information so you can feel completely at ease about sending your child to our school. Franklin is a family orientated school that aims high and has a clear vision of excellence for every student.
