Queanbeyan South Public School
Queanbeyan South Public School is a culturally diverse primary school with a student population of 360 set in a large regional city close to the border of the Australian Capital Territory. Students share their educational journey with children from 35 cultural backgrounds including 21% with an Aboriginal background and 28% who identify as being of a language background other than English. The school has two district Opportunity classes for gifted and talented students and three district multicategorical classes for students with learning difficulties. Early intervention needs are catered for through the Ngurranbai on-site Transition to School Program operating four days a week for three to five year olds. The school is complimented by an extensive school garden and a Stephanie Alexander Kitchen with six bays for food preparation and serving. The school is dedicated to equity and excellence in education and literacy and numeracy remain a focus through the Early Action for Success (Literacy) Program. Language Literacy and Learning (L3) and Targeted Early Numeracy (TEN) will remain a major focus for professional learning in Years K-2 with Focus on Reading a continued emphasis to enhance inferential reading strategies Years 3-6. L3 and Focus on Reading have proved to be highly successful strategies to enhance reading skills and will be followed through under the new syllabus and School Management Plan 2015 - 2017. This is enhanced with state of the art technology throughout the school including video conferencing facilities, computer laboratories, laptops and tablet technology while every classroom is fitted with internet and interactive whiteboard technology. The school is involved in the Active After School sports program two afternoons a week while the community also uses school facilities during the week including after school care. Queanbeyan South has a large school choir regularly performing in the public arena including Parliament House in Canberra. Our school contributes annually to the Queanbeyan Performing Arts Festival held in Canberra. The school is involved in a variety of sporting and academic challenges including the Engineering Games held annually in Canberra.
