Blacktown West Public School
Blacktown West Public School opened in 1957. The school community includes families from a diverse cultural background. The school receives supplementary funding to assist in implementing additional strategies to improve student outcomes in literacy and numeracy which includes the EAfS (Early Action for Success) program targetting K-2 learniers. This has been a major contributing factor to the extent of the growth of students' skills from Kindergarten to Year 6. The school offers a wide range of programs in modern dance, oracy, choir, debating, student leadership and participation in zone sporting teams. The school also provides specific programs for students with a mild intellectual disability and behavioural and emotional needs. Quality teaching and learning is supported by outstanding technology programs and resources. Teachers are building the students' skills in all key learning areas through the use of interactive whiteboards and iPads and fully networked computers in all classrooms, the computer room and the mini lab attached to the library. The students, staff and community have developed a shared sense of purpose, a strong sense of ownership and a commitment to sustainability. A major part of the success has been the empowerment of the students. The long term environmental plan includes energy conservation, water efficiency, the development of the grounds and waste minimization. The mission statement 'Together We Grow' encapsulates all aspects of the school's values and policies.
