Cringila Public School

Cringila Public School is a culturally diverse school committed to providing high quality, evidenced-based educational opportunities for our students. As an Early Action for Success (EAfS) school with a growth mindset we have high expectations for all students establishing a culture of achievement. Our dedicated staff work collaboratively ensuring students are engaged in innovative and differentiated learning. Our school motto of a ‘Caring and Cultural community’, and our school Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) expectations; Respectful, Responsible and Safe, underpin the culture of the school and our three strategic directions. We have a strong focus on literacy and numeracy and current and future initiatives include Visible Learning, STEM and inquiry-based learning. Cringila Public school is acknowledged for our Living Classroom and we collaborate with the Warrawong Community of Schools to deliver our Permaculture Partners initiative.

Cringila Public School remediation project

History of the site

On September 19, 2017, smoke was observed rising from the ground in a secure area near the staff carpark at Cringila Public School, indicating underground activity linked to landfill material. In response, environmental consultants conducted air monitoring on multiple dates in late September and October 2017, confirming the site could continue operating. The department prioritises the safety of staff, students, and the community and will collaborate with NSW Health and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to address the situation.

Much of the originally affected area has already been remediated, with significant work completed since 2001 when the underground fire was first detected. The department remains committed to finishing the remediation of the remaining area and will keep the school community informed through updates on their website.

A remediation project is underway to complete the capping of the affected area and return it to the school.

Current remediation project

In May 2025 we began a remediation project to install a capping layer in the fenced off area of the school grounds. The project addresses concerns related to historical landfill material in the area.

The department engaged environmental land consultants to develop the remediation plan and a community information session was held in April 2025. This informed local residents, parents and carers and staff about the project and provided an opportunity for feedback and questions.

It is expected that the remediation work will be completed in Term 3 2025, followed by the development of a long-term environmental management plan. Once the remediation work is completed, it is expected the area will be able to be used by the school.

New public preschool,100 new public preschools: Cringila Public Preschool

As part of the plan to rebuild public education, the NSW Government is investing $769 million to deliver 100 new public preschools. This targeted investment includes building public preschools at new government primary schools in NSW, to boost access to public preschool across the state. The 100 new public preschools will be co-located on public school sites, including new and redeveloped school sites, helping more children access a preschool program before starting school. Work is underway for a new public preschool at Cringila Public School. The new public preschool will provide a safe and engaging environment for preschool children. It will feature specially designed rooms and a quality outdoor play area. The construction of the preschool is expected to be completed in time for Day 1 Term 1 2027 to accommodate up to 40 children per day.

Maintenance

To ensure the safety, reliability and longevity of our schools, every school across NSW receives maintenance. The Department undertakes preventative and routine maintenance every year, and repairs as needed. The Department also reviews the planned maintenance program for each school every year and reviews those items that are predicted to require work to help prolong the life of the school buildings and facilities.
