Marrickville West Public School

Marrickville West Primary School was established in 1886 and is located in the inner western suburbs of Sydney, between Marrickville and Dulwich Hill train stations. Families at the school are representative of the surrounding culturally and socially diverse community. Around 50% of students at the school have language backgrounds other than English. 8% have Aboriginal heritage. Over 40 languages are represented amongst families at the school. Marrickville West Primary School is growing in enrolment numbers. At the start of 2017 the staffing allocation allowed for 15 mainstream classes and one support class (autism). In addition to classroom teachers, the school employs specialist staff for music, learning support, English language, creative and performing arts, languages other than English and sport. The school's statement of purpose is: Work as one to develop a school culture based on respectful relationships and innovative practice; to inspire confident and successful learners, proactive and effective leaders and responsible citizens. This statement reflects the school's motto (Work As One) and a commitment to ensure all students benefit from an innovative educational program and inclusive school culture. School programs promote academic achievement, social responsibility and respectful relationships at all levels. Strategic Directions in the current School Plan (2015-2017) reflect a commitment to Quality Teaching and Learning, Student Well Being and Leadership development. Enriching activities in literacy, public speaking, numeracy, information technology, leadership, music, cultural studies, science, creative and performing arts and sport ensure that students are able to engage with learning experiences that target their talents, interests and potential. Every student has the opportunity to learn one of four community languages. Aboriginal, Multicultural, Environmental and Values Education are embedded into all aspects of the curriculum. Marrickville West Primary School benefits from strong partnerships with parents and the wider, local community. This relationship is enhanced by an active Parents & Citizens committee and a School as Community Centre (SaCC) operating on site.
