Crown Street Public School, located in Sydney's inner city, is a community-minded school dating from 1849. Although enrolments have risen rapidly in recent years, the school maintains a community atmosphere. A partnership of students, staff, school families and the wider community provides an inclusive learning community, demonstrating great community spirit; with its inclusive culture and innovative educational initiatives. All students access a varied rich curriculum, providing a stimulating and supportive learning environment. Our school community draws from a wide range of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds and parent involvement in all aspects of school life is valued and encouraged. Our extremely capable, dedicated staff cater effectively for a diverse range of student ability levels and needs. Our students are motivated learners who thrive in a well-resourced school, where our highly supportive school community assists in providing the range of resources necessary for each child to achieve their potential. Focus areas include literacy, numeracy, technology, environmental sustainability and enhanced leadership skills, resilience and well-being for all students and staff. Specialist teachers support students through learning assistance, Reading Recovery and English as a second language programs. Monitoring of student progress through ongoing assessment is an essential component of all teaching and learning programs. Extra-curricular programs include Mandarin, Aboriginal and contemporary dance, Chess, Choir, Band, Debating, and Public Speaking. All students are taught Mandarin, with additional classes for students from Chinese backgrounds. Sport and physical fitness play an important part in the life of Crown Street students. A cohesive Learning Support Team caters to the needs of all children. The school has very strong Music program comprising of bands, string ensembles and student choirs.
