Pagewood Public School

Pagewood Public School works in active partnership with its community to maintain an inviting and nurturing learning environment. The school prepares students to embrace a challenging environment and take personal responsibility in striving for excellence in all endeavours. We aim to foster a lifelong interest in learning to ensure students become productive, confident, responsible and successful members of Australian society. Because of its relatively low enrolment levels, its large grassy playground and its tremendous amount of community involvement, Pagewood Public School has the atmosphere of a country school despite being located in a highly industrialised area of Sydney. The school plays an important role in the community of south-eastern Sydney by offering a small school environment for those families who believe their children will thrive in such a setting. Many of our students have a parent who attended the school. It is a school that is primarily focused on achieving well in literacy and numeracy while at the same time ensuring that science and technology, human society and its environment, creative and practical arts and personal development, health and physical education are taught effectively. Our Learning and Support Teacher allocation is 2 1/2 days each week, helping children with learning difficulties, primarily in literacy but also in numeracy. The teacher-librarian enriches literacy programs, as does the teacher of English as an Additional Language/Dialect. Students are able to participate in a range of classroom and extra-curricula activities such as band, choir, dance, French or Mandarin language, public-speaking, gymnastics and sporting gala days. For a school of our size, we usually perform creditably in most sports competitions. Our vision for the successful education of our pupils is achieved in the following ways: Sharing the responsibility for learning with students, teachers, parents and the wider community; Fostering an open, approachable and inviting school environment that recognises and values both parental involvement and needs; Implementing a dynamic and engaging curriculum that addresses the academic, emotional, social and physical needs of the students; Addressing the individual needs of students by incorporating quality teaching standards; Supporting and encouraging students to achieve their personal best; Explicit teaching of core values; Incorporating individual staff expertise into the teaching of the curriculum and the ongoing professional development of staff; Providing opportunities for students to actively participate and represent the school in the wider community to prepare them to become productive, successful members of society.
