Portland Central School
Portland Central warmly welcomes new families to experience our caring, personalised approach to learning. We ensure optimal educational and positive experiences in all aspects of school life for every student. As a K-12 school students are guaranteed the unique opportunity of a seamless transition into each stage of their educational journey. A strong school spirit is fostered through positive behaviour for learning, restorative discipline, high expectations and uniform. Dedicated highly qualified staff, including subject specialists, are committed to all students reaching their potential. Literacy and numeracy is a priority with highly effective programs resulting in students exiting foundation years reading above stage expectations. Students experience high levels of success at local eisteddfods and community performances demonstrating their effective skill development from our extensive music program. Extensive creative art programs are deeply valued by the school community including specialised art classes funded by grants from the Portland Art Purchase Society. Indigenous cultural experiences are embedded in daily practice with the active use of our yarning circle and the opportunity to deepen the connection with the land and learn Wiradjuri language. Leadership programs are available for students in all year groups with student voice represented through our Student Representative Council. Sporting opportunities include both team sports and individual events with regular western region and district representatives in swimming, athletics and various sports. Strong wellbeing programs, including Second Step, develop key social and emotional skills with students further supported through positive outreach programs delivered by external services. The school is extremely fortunate to have speech therapists working individually and with small groups weekly, strong connections with Lithgow Information and Neighbourhood Centre with their Child, Youth and Family Counsellor weekly, and specialised programs delivered including Resilience Doughnut, Kindness Projects, Circle of Security parent group and our own highly experienced school psychologist. The school is future focused and boasts state of the art technology and facilities accessed by students in all stages. Technology is embedded in learning with new interactive panels, iPads, laptops, computer centres and video conferencing facilities. Students utilise our commercial kitchen, science laboratory, agricultural farm and industrial technology metal work trade training centre to engage in daily learning. During break times students are able to enjoy our student operated Cafe, multi-purpose Community Centre, indoor fitness centre, undercover COLA, fixed equipment and grassed play area. Strong connections with the community are integral to our success actively engaging in a wide variety of events. Opportunities are provided for students to participate in our local Spring Fair, regular visits to Tabulam Cottage aged care facility, Waste to Art, Sustainability Expo and local families attending weekly playgroup on site.
