Lightning Ridge Central School

Lightning Ridge Central School is a Kindergarten to Year 12 school, located in the remote mining town of Lightning Ridge. It has an enrolment of approximately 420 students. Almost 40% of the students are Aboriginal. A further 5% come from a language background other than English-speaking. The school is very physically attractive, with new buildings and facilities. Lightning Ridge Central School attracts significant funding to assist the school provide equity and opportunity for its students. In 2009 the school received funding from the Priority Schools Progam, the Country Area Program, and the Schools in Partnership program. The school offers a diverse and rich curriculum, including teaching the Gamilaraay Yuwaalaraay language to secondary students as their compulsory Language Other Than English. Vocational Education also has a strong focus in the secondary school. Lightning Ridge Central School has successfully embraced the Reading to Learn program across the primary section of the school, and is looking to expand that to the secondary school.
