Kootingal Public School
Kootingal Public School is situated in the Cockburn Valley, 20 kilometres north of Tamworth. It has approximately 200 students, and offers all the benefits of a large school, but with the friendliness and family atmosphere of a small rural school. 15% of our students identify as Aboriginal. We work closely with the local community to build a caring and collaborative learning environment. The bright, attractive classrooms and the spacious well kept grounds are a feature of our school and reflect the pride that our staff, students and community have in it. Our experienced staff ensure all students have the opportunity to participate in a range of academic, cultural and sporting activities that challenge and inspire them to do their personal best. Through our values program we endeavour to foster positive relationships between staff and students and work together to show respect, tolerance, care and consideration for one another. Our levels system ensures all students are recognised and rewarded for their effort. Kootingal Public School has been recognised for its programs in environmental education with the introduction of a number of successful initiatives. This year we received the regional award for 'Excellence in School/ Community Partnerships.' We also have a strong tradition of sporting success across a range of sporting activities and we were a finalist in the regional awards for 'Excellence in Sports Education in 2010.' Student leadership is fostered through our active Student Representative Council where senior students play an important role in decision making and fund raising. They also take on the role of Peer Support Leaders where they conduct small group activities based on the 'You Can Do It Program'. Students have the chance to develop their talent in the performing arts areas by taking a leading role at our regular assemblies and the bi-annual concert where a variety of musical, dance and drama items are performed. Our main focus continues to be on improving our Literacy and Numeracy results and our Learning Difficulties Teacher plays an important role in supporting students who need additional help in their classrooms. Visitors to our school comment on the wonderful spirit within the school and make special mention of the behaviour and manners shown by our students. The wearing of school uniform is strongly encouraged and supported by both the principal and the P&C to create a feeling of belonging.
