Green Hill Public School

Green Hill Public School is a small school on the outskirts of Kempsey, a large country town on the mid north coast of NSW. The school has a special connection to the local Aboriginal community, who have historically embraced the school as the nurturing environment they prefer for the transition of their children from home to school. 98% of the school enrolment is Aboriginal and we incorporate a strong framework of culturally rich learning experiences into our classroom programs. The school uses Accelerated Literacy, a program developed for Aboriginal children, which enables access to literate contexts to guide students' understandings in literacy. Count Me in Too Indigenous, Dunghutti Language program, Block 'n' Blow, Munch 'n' Crunch and other health and welfare programs are all high focus areas in the school. Recently, the school was involved in developing, implementing, writing, illustrating and publishing a program aimed at Aboriginal children in Child Protection. This initiative won the NSW Baxter Award 2009. The school works in close collaboration with the local Dunghutti people to enhance opportunities for their children to work towards a new era of success in terms of educational outcomes and reconciliation.
