Forster Public School

Forster Public School is situated on the coast only metres from the beach, drawing students from a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds. The school has spacious, well kept grounds and basketball court. Situated close by is an excellent Aquatic Centre, tennis courts, squash courts, cricket nets, a large playing field and an outdoor learning area overlooking the ocean. The existing site was once the High School and was occupied by the Primary School in 1993. The original school site was established at Pilot Hill in 1872. Forster Public School is a dynamic, caring and successful learning environment. We offer a strong academic focus with programs that provide challenge and opportunities for high achievement and stimulating programs that meet the individual learning needs of every student. The school provides comprehensive student-centred learning programs across all Key Learning Areas in meeting the diverse needs of the student population in a climate where students are safe, happy and successful. Literacy and numeracy remain our major priorities. In 2010 - 2011, the school has been involved in a National Schools Partnership project which has improved student outcomes in Literacy. Students are provided with extensive learning opportunities in technology using state-of-the art equipment, including interactive whiteboards and video conferencing facilities. A Support Unit, consisting of four classes, caters for students with intellectual disabilities. Our students have excelled in creative arts and on the sporting field, and have willingly participated in a wide range of extra-curricula activities, many of which you can read about in the Annual School Report. Talent development opportunities are offered through participation in creative and performing arts, sporting and academic competitions (UNSW, Tournament of the Minds and Murder Under the Microscope), and cultural and debating activities. Forster Public School is proud of its partnership with the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation. A new state of the art kitchen facility, built in 2010, will enhance our existing outstanding garden program and will involve children in the growing, harvesting, preparing, sharing and learning about food. Our caring teachers encourage high standards of conduct in well-managed classrooms and our pastoral care programs ensure students feel cared for and valued. Student leadership is a strong feature of our school through the student councillor and buddies programs. Students are engaged in the decision-making processes of the school. The school received an Education Week Excellence Award for the school's Student Welfare program in 2006. Strong, focused programs recognise and value our Indigenous culture and heritage. Student leadership programs encourage individual and civic responsibility. A valued parent community is an active participant in all aspects of school life. The school is a proud member of the Great Lakes Learning Community.
