Cudgen Public School

Cudgen Public school is a semi rural, small school committed to quality teaching and learning in an inclusive, equitable and safe environment. The school is a member of the Coastal Learning Community and it is valued as a meeting place, a community memorial and a place of mutual support. The school staff, students and community exhibit pride in the facilities of the school and the achievements of students, which is demonstrated by the care taken of the school environment and the broad representation of the community at school functions. Cudgen Public School has a loyal, supportive and highly professional teaching and support staff with an enormous depth of experience and knowledge of the student body and the local community. This allows the school to effectively monitor and cater for individual student needs. Staff members are committed to ongoing professional learning and quality improvement, promoting an expectation that all children will reach their potential and achieve their personal best. This focus is reflected in National and International testing regimes. Each classroom is equipped with an interactive whiteboard and the school has a Connected Classroom facility, allowing students and staff to connect through video conferencing to other schools across the state. This is in addition to a computer laboratory and mobile laptop laboratory. Recent provision of a hall, new canteen and classroom refurbishments have ensured a quality learning environment for all students. The school has a significant and well respected Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population, adding a cultural richness to the local area. Students experience a broad range of cultural, academic and social activities including senior and junior choir, instrumental group, verse speaking, public speaking, visiting performances, safety workshops, art, crafts and excursions. The school provides a variety of sporting skills such as Auskick, soccer and hockey clinics, swimming, lawn bowls, gymnastics, athletics, indoor sports and interschool team sports. A strong Values program is supported through student recognition for social skills, application, achievement and leadership. Leadership is fostered through the Student Representative Council, biannual leadership conference, Buddy programs and the acceptance of responsibilities across the school. Additional programs include Reading Recovery, in class Learning Support Officers, Story Dogs, a Senior Boys Program, Premier's Sporting and Reading Challenge, Orientation and Transition to School. The school is currently investigating the provision of an on site Speech and Occupational Therapist. The school provides support for students and their families through close liaison with outside agencies, parent information programs and strong communication links with classroom teachers.
