Carlton South Public School is a large, diverse school situated in the southern suburbs of Sydney, close to St George Hospital and Tafe and the satellite city of Hurstville. The school enjoys a very good reputation of educational excellence, sporting and creative achievements and caters for different learning styles by offering both support and enrichment programs. Our dedicated and caring staff, provide extra opportunities such as dance, choir, drama club, chess, public speaking, debating, steel band, training and performing band. The school's strong focus on quality education in literacy and numeracy provide a firm foundation for future learning. We have a high proportion of students that successfully apply for selective high school placements across our region. Our Learning Support Team ensure that students needing extra support, gain this through various programs such as English as a Second Language, Reading Recovery, Support Teacher Learning and the successful Parent Tutor and Rainbow Reading programs. Some of our younger students in Year 1 who need some extra assistance in reading get the opportunity to work on our Being Excited About Reading program (BEAR) working with trained parents five mornings a week for 10 weeks. Our school is focused on preparing students for the 21st century through the provision of up to date technology and providing opportunities for students to think creatively and critically. We have interactive whiteboard technology in all classrooms, and a well-resourced library, which is the centre of learning. The library has a network of computers and connected classroom available which allows for video conferencing with other schools. Our students also have access to wireless notebook computers and IPad's to enhance their information and communication skills. Our schools core values of cooperation, honesty, kindness, respect and responsibility, supported by our Good Discipline and Effective Student Welfare policy, provides the basis for student well- being and happiness. The school is focused on promoting leadership skills and opportunities, for students through the Student Representative Council(SRC), Buddy Program, Gardening Club, and peer mediation program known as The Helping Hand Program. Our school provides an extensive transition to school program which supports our younger students, and we have an excellent relationship with the local preschools in the area. Our school is a member of the Bayside Learning Community which consists of five primary schools and two local secondary schools. This program promotes the middle years of schooling and has created opportunities for both students and teachers to learn more about high school and work with the high school staff at both the high schools and primary schools. Our parent community work together with the staff to enhance our students' learning by being involved in a variety of programs and decision making around the school. Our school's motto "Endeavour" and banner statement "Quality Education and in a Caring Environment" underpins everything we do at Carlton South Public School. We take pride in being a large school with a small school feeling where the students and families are well known by all.
