Belmont Public School
Walking into Belmont Public School you are immediately taken by its aesthetically pleasing, secure environment - an environment conducive to producing educational excellence. Belmont Public School is rapidly becoming known for its expertise using technology to access the curriculum. Each classroom, the library, the purpose built computer laboratory and video-conferencing room has an interactive whiteboard that brings the classroom alive and the world instantly to our students. Through the use of interactive whiteboards students are involved as active participants in thought provoking teaching and learning activities. Teachers are constantly up-skilling in the use of technology and due to our staff's expertise the school has become a hub for training teachers in technology from neighbouring schools. With an emphasis on literacy and numeracy in an interactive environment, students are seen as individuals and encouraged to achieve their personal best. Kindergarten teachers commenced the L3 program (Language, Literacy and Learning) in 2010. L3 is a research based and effective Kindergarten intervention, targeting text reading and writing. Kindergarten teachers report this new approach to teaching has produced results that exceed regional literacy targets set for kindergarten. This teaching style will be phased in across the whole school. The school offers a wonderful blend of experienced teachers and teachers who are new to the profession. The school is unique in our area due to the large percentage of Aboriginal students. This has allowed us to focus on the learning styles of Aboriginal students, Aboriginal culture and involvement in the local Aboriginal Educational Consultative Group, which has had a positive effect on all students. In the area of creative and performing arts, the school has a band, choir and an annual performance of the highest quality. Students also take part in the Premier's Reading Challenge, Spelling Bee and Sporting Challenge. The school has strong sporting traditions excellent sporting equipment and enters teams in most state sporting knockouts. Two teams compete in a rugby league competition every Friday in terms two and three and also take part in the 'Knight's Knockout. The school grounds are expansive with lush green sporting fields and a multi-purpose court. The classrooms are all modern in design and offer facilities second to none. A recently completed covered outdoor learning area allows teachers an alternative area to allow their classes to learn and develop skills in physical activities irrespective of weather conditions. The school is supported by an active Parents & Citizens committee which assists in school governance and supplying resources for school priorities. We encourage students through our social skills program to become confident, resilient, organised, co-operative and persistent learners in all facets of school life. The school nurtures our students to become 'Free Spirits Striving to Achieve'.
