Ashbury Public School

Ashbury Public School has been serving the community since 1928 and today continues its long-standing tradition of providing an excellent academic grounding whilst offering all children the opportunity to develop their own strengths and interests to their full potential. The school is nestled amongst the native trees in a quiet residential area between Ashfield and Canterbury.  Ashbury Public School’s student wellbeing program is informed by the Positive Behaviour for Learning framework and Restorative Practices. All students are encouraged to build and maintain healthy relationships and focus on repairing those relationships if harm is caused. This approach fosters mutual respect and encourages responsibility for behaviour and actions. The school offers a balanced curriculum and a vast range of exciting extra-curricular activities in the academic, creative arts and sporting domains. Teams in the Primary Schools Sporting Association (PSSA) competition include Softball, T-ball, Netball, Cricket, Soccer, OzTag and Touch Football. Programs offered include debating, public speaking, bands, dance groups, choirs, recorder, ukulele, the green team, chess and Mandarin classes. Students have the option of being involved in up to 8 bands and music ensembles. The Ashbury Concert, Intermediate, Training and Jazz bands all received gold awards at the UNSW Band Festival. Students in the choirs and recorder ensembles regularly perform at the Sydney Opera House, Town Hall and Sydney Superdome as members of the Arts Unit massed choirs, ensembles and School Spectacular. In addition to a staff of experienced and highly committed classroom teachers, the school employs specialist teachers including Intensive Reading, Physical Education and Digital Technologies teachers. Special Religious Education and Special Education in Ethics lessons are offered to all students each week and groups include Buddhist, Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Protestant and Primary Ethics. Parents and carers are actively involved in all areas of the school and the students at Ashbury benefit from the collective expertise of their community. The school P&C works collaboratively with teachers to support learning opportunities for all students and coordinate fundraising and community events. Ashbury Public School is also supported by an active School Council. The Ashbury Community Garden is maintained by an enthusiastic group of parents and community members and the students at Ashbury enjoy time in this urban oasis to complete class work, participate in kitchen garden workshops and check on the chickens and native beehives.
