Albury West Public School
At Albury West Public School, we aim to develop the personal, social, emotional and academic aspects of all of our students. We have a long and proud history of providing high quality education for all students. We use a staged approach in all curriculum areas to ensure the steady progression of our students. Maximising achievement in literacy and numeracy is the major focus of our learning programs, whilst striking an appropriate balance for individual needs and interests. We are an active and proud member of the Crossing Point Learning Community made up of neighbouring public schools, our local high school, Albury High and Charles Sturt University. Albury West Public School serves a diverse socio-economic and cultural community. The school is a member of the Improving Literacy and Numeracy National Partnership. This program allows our dedicated staff the opportunity to provide learning programs that are innovative, varied and promote 21st Century learning, attendance and engagement of students. Our school supports gifted and talented students from Kindergarten to Year 6 with enriched literacy and numeracy activities. The school also supports children with identified learning needs through quality literacy programs, Focus on Reading, Building Numeracy Leadership, Count Me In Too, Targeted Early Numeracy, Personalised Learning Plans and significant extra in-class support. Our school is a Visible Learning school. This initiative means that our teachers are using the same language to teach quality learning habits. Our teachers are helping our 21st Century learners: make informed, responsible decisions; learn alongside others; preserve with their learning; be creative, critical thinkers and be self–reflective and believe in themselves as a learner. Unique features and initiatives include: student leadership, SRC, buddy and transition programs; innovative use of information technology with interactive whiteboards and IPads available in every classroom; outstanding representation in a variety of sports at both local and state level; and a strong community partnership, with active parental involvement and support from our active P and C. We have a strong focus on the support of individual learning needs and student welfare, with ongoing programs designed to maintain a positive environment ensuring our students enjoy a happy, safe and rewarding learning experience. Our effective student welfare approach, Positive Behaviour for Learning, ensures the promotion of our three values - respect, responsibility and care. We encourage and celebrate individuality and achievement. Our transition to Kindergarten class, 'Little Gems', allows children who would not normally have access to a preschool to visit our school for half days. This program provides future students of our school an opportunity to discover what 'big school' is all about. It also helps them make friends in a small, nurturing group. Students are motivated to achieve and are encouraged to develop a love of learning and achieving 'personal bests' in all areas. Staff members are also encouraged to pursue professional learning opportunities to ensure that we offer learning programs of the highest standard. Our School Motto: "To Wider Horizons" encompasses everything we try to achieve at Albury West Public School in developing the skills and values necessary for success in school and in life.
