As part of the NSW Government's plan to rebuild public education, the NSW Budget is delivering $2.1 billion for new and upgraded schools in regional NSW. This targeted investment will ensure growing communities get access to a world class public education.

As part of the NSW Government's commitment to deliver expanded access to early childhood education, planning for this school will include an on-site public preschool.

Progress summary

There has been significant progress on the design for the new school, and we look forward to sharing these with the community later this year. The design is being developed in consultation with key technical stakeholders and the Project Reference Group (PRG) which includes school leadership representatives.

Due diligence activities such as flood studies and geotechnical investigations are currently underway on site. These studies will help inform both the design and support the preparation of the Review of Environmental Factors (REF), which is progressing ahead of its upcoming public exhibition in mid 2026. The REF is part of the planning process and includes detailed plans for the proposed construction and operation activities. The community will have an opportunity to view and provide feedback on these plans during the exhibition period.

Next steps

Complete the next design phase which will include internal building layouts, external building components such as facades and material finishes and concept landscape design.
A community information session to share the design progress with the community and provide an opportunity to ask questions and share feedback with the project team.
Consultation with the local Aboriginal community through ‘Connecting with Country’.
Progress Statutory Planning documentation including designs and specialist reports. These will be submitted as a Review of Environmental Factors (REF) for Statutory Planning approval, prior to the start of construction.
Prepare tender and contract documentation to engage a main works contractor to build the new primary school and public preschool.

Why is the department building a new primary school instead of upgrading the Googong Public School?

Googong’s rapid growth happened faster than the initial projections, leading to an urgent need for more enrolment capacity. The existing school site at Googong Public School cannot accommodate the projected increase in enrolments or the classrooms needed to meet demand. Building a new primary school was the most effective solution to ensure we can provide quality learning environments now and into the future.

Yes, the Department of Education follows a careful planning process and actively plans for growth when building new schools. We thoroughly review demographic data and enrolment trends to identify areas where additional school capacity is needed.

Through this approach, we identified that the population growth in Googong was much faster than originally projected and a new school would best address the increasing need for additional capacity in Googong.

Will the new school be big enough for the growing population in Googong?

What will the intake area changes be when the new primary school opens?

The intake area (sometimes referred to as the school catchment) will be confirmed closer to the school opening. It will be based on the most up to date demographic data on the number of school-aged children living in the local area at the time the school opens, along with consideration of suitable active and public transport options and enrolment trends at surrounding schools.
