Sydney WaterFix Schools program

Return to top of page

Sydney Water’s WaterFix® Schools program is a partnership between the NSW Department of Education and Sydney Water that helps schools improve water efficiency, reduce leaks and lower water costs.

The program focuses on practical, high-impact upgrades and supports schools to build smarter water-use habits over time.

Why it matters

Saving water supports sustainability and reduces avoidable costs so that resources can be redirected to where they matter most.

Proven results

In its first year, the WaterFix® Schools program worked with the 100 highest water-using schools in the Sydney Water network and delivered strong results:

  • Program investment: around $100,000
  • Water saved: 111 million megalitres (111 million litres), which is just over 44 Olympic-sized swimming pools
  • Estimated cost savings: over $380,000
  • Additional opportunities identified: hundreds of further leak repairs and water-saving improvements, expected to deliver further savings
  • Other benefits: improved rainwater harvesting and early positive changes in water-use habits.

What the program does

Schools participating in the program receive:

  • a data logger on the school’s water meter to analyse usage
  • an on-site audit to identify potential causes of high water use and identify leaks
  • a report outlining practical ways to save water such as repairing tap and toilet leaks, installing water-efficient devices and optimising rainwater systems. The findings in the report can then be used to inform maintenance and upgrade works as required.
