Minimising food waste

Return to top of page

Strategies can be implemented to reduce the amount of avoidable food waste – leftovers in the lunch box which don’t get eaten, or discarded because students don’t actually like them, or they simply have too much in their lunch boxes or they actually just want to play and don’t have time to eat!

Ways schools can help reduce food waste

  1. Play First. Eat Later – flipping lunch and play around has not only been linked to reduced food waste but improvements in concentration and less trips to the sick bay in the afternoon.
  2. Students take home uneaten food
  3. Encourage families to involve students in packing lunches they will eat

Pretty Beach Public School and The Entrance Public School have both adopted the Play First, Eat Later approach to meal breaks and experienced unexpected benefits beyond reducing food waste.
