Planning approval
Planning approval for the new multipurpose hall has been granted by the Department of Education’s Planning and Assessment team. The Decision Statement has been published on the Planning Portal for Division 5.1 (Part 5) Activities.
Site establishment and remediation works
In early April, we began preparing the site for construction. The initial works included putting up fencing, setting up temporary facilities, preparing utilities like water and power, and doing surveying work to mark out exactly where the new building will go.
In late April, site establishment was paused after suspected asbestos containing material was found in the ground. The area it was found in is separated by hoarding and inaccessible to staff and students. Additional safety measures were put in place immediately and an independent hygienist was engaged to carry out testing.
The material was confirmed as bonded asbestos, which means it is attached to other material such as cement or vinyl and cannot be crumbled by light pressure. Works to remove asbestos containing materials are scheduled take place during the upcoming school holidays and are expected to finish before the beginning of Term 3. Initial construction has begun
To prepare for the main construction of the multipurpose hall, we recently removed 14 trees which were directly on the site of the new multipurpose hall. These removals works were carried out in line with the approved planning pathway (Review of Environmental Factors). We have also begun bulk excavation.
The safety of the community is our top priority; these works are being carried out in designated areas of the construction zone where no asbestos was found and with the approval of an independent hygienist.
