New primary school and co-located public early learning in West Dapto

The proposed name of the new primary school and public preschool will be developed in line with the Naming of NSW Government Schools Policy and Procedures and involve consultation with the community before a name is proposed to the Geographical Naming Board and to the Minister for Education.

The new primary school in West Dapto will be coeducational school taking student enrolments from the local intake area from Preschool to Year 6.

The Principal will be appointed approximately 12 months before the opening of the school. After the appointment of the Principal, some leadership positions will be advertised. The remaining teaching positions at the school will be advertised as per normal staffing vacancies once enrolment numbers are determined.

Enrolments for Kindergarten to Year 6 will take place approximately a year before opening in line with the appointment of a school principal.

The primary school is being developed to cater for the growing population in the West Dapto community.

The intake area (sometimes referred to as the school catchment) will be confirmed closer to the school's opening. It will be based on the most up to date demographic data on the number of school aged children living in the local area at the time the school opens, along with consideration of suitable active and public transport options and enrolment trends at surrounding schools. Intake area boundaries are updated regularly to ensure every child in NSW has a well-resourced local public school to attend.

Adjustments are made to accommodate a new school into a local network and this typically takes place around 12 months before the new school opens. This ensures the community is well informed in advance of enrolment periods and the school can prepare for anticipated student numbers.

After a principal is appointed, consultation, including a survey will be developed to gain community feedback about logo and uniform options for the new school. Responses from the survey and consultation will help inform the decision of the school uniform and logo.

The hours of operation have not yet been determined. Start time decisions will be made later in the project.

A new local road will be constructed to provide vehicular access to the school, including a kiss-andride zone and queuing area for vehicles. This will reduce traffic impacts on Shone Avenue and surrounding local road network.

The primary school will have a dedicated carpark for staff and accessible spaces for support learning classes. The co-located public early learning will also have its own carpark for staff and parents. Outside of school drop-off and pick-up hours, the kiss-and-ride zone provides additional on-street parking.

Bus school services are proposed from the existing bus stop at Shone Avenue, and bicycle spaces will be provided for staff and students.

To support the school walking catchment, pedestrian crossings are proposed in two locations:

• near the entry of the new local road parallel with Shone Avenue
• Shone Avenue, north of Greenview Drive.

It is proposed that school bus services will utilise the existing bus stop on Shone Avenue along the school frontage, subject to consultation with Transport for NSW. Buses arriving from the north would use the roundabout of Shone Avenue/Horsley Drive to turn around.

The catchment (or intake) area for the school is not yet finalised, but it is anticipated the buses will service areas of the catchment not within walking distance of the school. The catchment area will be finalised approximately a year before the school opens.

The construction of the new local road will introduce a signed intersection at Shone Avenue, which is currently being designed with consideration for traffic and safety. A roundabout is one of the intersection types under consideration, with the final requirements still to be confirmed.
