Nowra East Public School upgrade

We are expecting the contact to be awarded in early 2026.

Early works will start in Term 4 and main works will commence in early 2026.

We are planning for the upgrade to Nowra East Public School to be completed by mid-2027.

The preschool and support learning unit will both have designated outdoor play areas with access from the new building. An adventure play area, a nature play area and an upgrade to the area to the east of the hall is being designed to incorporate Connecting with Country themes discussed during consultation with Elders during a Walk on Country.

The current preschool will be temporarily relocated after the 2025 school year along with temporary classrooms in preparation for the upgrade. Preschool students are planned to be in the temporary facilities from the start of 2026.

The preschool will be temporarily relocated to the east side of the school. Demountables will be installed for the duration of works and the preschool will have its own entrance via Wallace Street.

To accommodate the increase in preschool student capacity from 20 places to 40 places, the school car park will expand from 14 formalised spaces to approximately 31 car spaces. Four of these spaces will be provisioned for accessibility and support learning needs.

We are also working with Shoalhaven City Council to alter some street parking to suit the current issues identified around the school. This includes proposals to remove the redundant temporary bus zone on Journal Street and add additional short-term parking on Douglas Street to increase the number of parking spaces available during peak drop off and pick up times. These proposals are subject to Council’s approval.

We prepare various plans including construction and environmental management plans. These plans outline how we will manage the construction impacts which are likely to happen on our site. Each construction site is different, and we use different construction approaches to suit each project. We consider nearby residents, businesses and construction sites when developing our plans.

Our planning approach includes:

• identifying all people who may hear or feel construction noise and vibration, or be impacted by the work
• adopting statutory and regulatory conditions and requirements for the project, which gives us a set of rules to follow when running our site
• identifying ways to reduce the noise and vibration we will make on the site
• identifying the safest routes for construction traffic to enter and exit the site
• managing safe access for our neighbours to get to and from their own properties
• making plans for parking, both on the site and near it
• working collaboratively with Council and adjacent construction sites to minimise disruption to the community and to address any shared challenges effectively
• setting up measures to control dust on the site. 

Intake areas are established approximately one year prior to new schools opening. The latest demographic data and anticipated growth trends within the community will be considered and the final intake area will be determined in consultation with local principals and relevant stakeholders. Any changes to Nowra East Public School intake area will be communicated with the community.
