As part of the NSW Government's plan to rebuild public education, the NSW Budget is delivering $4.1 billion for new and upgraded schools in Western Sydney. This targeted investment will ensure growing communities get access to a world class public education.

A project to upgrade Newington Public School is underway. The upgrade will provide access to permanent facilities in response to recent growth in the Sydney Olympic Park area.

It is anticipated that the upgrades will be completed in late 2027.

Progress summary

The double storey demountable classroom and Building G have now been removed.
The tender for the construction contract was awarded to Mettle in early July 2026.
Planning approval for the Newington Public School upgrade was granted by the Department of Education’s Planning and Assessment team on Monday 29 June 2026.
The determination, with any modifications has been published on the NSW Planning Portal for Division 5.1 (Part 5) Activities.

What will be the school’s student capacity once the upgrade is completed?

The permanent student capacity will be expanded to cater for 700 students. Newington Public School has experienced growth beyond permanent classroom capacity in recent years, which required demountable classrooms to fill the gap. This project will replace demountable classrooms with permanent state-of-the-art facilities. We expect growth to stabilise as new and upgraded schools nearby are completed.

When will works start?

Planning approval has been granted, and construction will start within the next month. Early works involving demountable removals fall outside of the REF planning approval process and have been carried out in advance so that we can start construction without delays and provide our students with permanent facilities sooner.

How will the community be notified of construction impacts?

We letterbox drop project updates each term and works notifications when required to our distribution area, which extends along Newington Boulevard from Avenue of Oceania to Baker Avenue and several side streets near the school including Devitt Avenue, Heidelberg Avenue and O’Neill Avenue. Works notifications are also distributed by the school and to our electronic mailing list.
