We’re empowering students and schools to make their learning environments more sustainable.
School Infrastructure NSW’s Sustainable Schools Grants is a four-year, $10 million dollar program that gives schools the opportunity to develop innovative hands-on projects that help students learn about environmentally sustainable practices and take real steps to enhance the sustainability of their school environment.
All NSW public shools and preschools are eligible to apply for funding up to $15,000, to deliver hands on, sustainability focused projects that link to the NSW curriculum.

We can’t wait to see these wonderful ideas become reality and enhance the sustainability of their school environment.
These public schools across NSW received awards ranging from $1,100 - $15,000 for innovative sustainability projects including kitchen gardens, water storage strategies, bee highways to improve biodiversity and more!
We’ll tell you more about the projects as they come to life.
The second round of applications will be open in November 2020.
Eligible projects must:
Involve hands-on activities for students to learn about sustainability, including but not limited to:
saving energy or water
planting trees and establishing food gardens
improving indoor comfort and air quality
increasing opportunities to ride and walk to school
encouraging waste avoidance and recycling.
Demonstrate links to the NSW curriculum.
Deliver improvement/s to the sustainability of the school environment.
Who is eligible to apply for the Sustainable Schools Grants?
All 2,200+ NSW public schools and 99 NSW Department of Education preschools are eligible to apply.
Non-government schools and preschools not owned and operated by the NSW Department of Education are ineligible to apply.
How much can my school or preschool apply for?
All schools and preschools can apply for up to $15,000 for their school sustainability projects.
There is no minimum funding and schools are encouraged to maximise their applications because they can only receive funding once.
How much funding is available for the Sustainable Schools Grants?
Over the four year program, $2.4 million has been allocated each year to eligible projects.
How will project funding be allocated to applicants?
Applications will first be assessed by Department of Education Officers against the Sustainable School Grants’ Guidelines, available on the intranet. To fairly distribute funding across the diverse range of projects, eligible projects will then be drawn from a lottery until that year’s funding has been exhausted.
Can my school or preschool apply more than once for funding?
Schools that miss out on a grant in the first year are eligible to apply for subsequent rounds of funding in future years.
Schools and preschools can only submit one application in each round of grant funding and can only receive one Sustainable Schools Grant over the four year program.
When will my school or preschool be informed if they are successful in receiving the grant?
The recipients of the Sustainable School Grants for 2020 have been announced.
