New public high school for Wilton as plans revealed for new primary school and preschool

Release date: 04 April 2025

The NSW Government will build a much-needed new high school for Wilton in Sydney’s South West growth corridor, as plans for the suburb’s new primary school and public preschool are revealed for the first time as part of a streamlined planning process.

The new schools will ensure families in this rapidly-growing suburb have access to a world class public education from preschool to Year 12 after more than a decade of poor planning and broken promises under the Liberals and Nationals.

The new primary school, opening Day 1, Term 1 2027, will have modern classrooms as well as a library, hall, covered outdoor learning area (COLA), administration and staff areas and support learning classrooms.

It is among the first new school projects to go through a streamlined planning process, after the NSW Government made significant reforms to cut red tape and fast-track the delivery of new and upgraded public schools.

The high school, which will be only the second public high school to open in the Wollondilly region, will open in stages, with the first intake in 2027. The community will be kept updated as plans for the high school progress, with further details to come later this year.

Public secondary students in Wilton currently have to travel to attend Picton High School, which needed new walls installed after the former Liberal National government botched an upgrade in 2021 and installed classrooms without walls at the school.

The new public preschool, to be co-located with the primary school, will offer 60 fee-free places for local children. It is part of the NSW Government’s historic preschool building boom that will deliver 100 new public preschools on public school sites across NSW by 2027.

The preferred site for the new primary school and public preschool at Wilton has been confirmed at 200 Fairway Drive, Wilton.

A community information session about the new primary school will be held at Wilton Public School Hall on Wednesday, 9 April from 3.45pm – 6.00pm, where the community is invited to view the master plan and concept designs and speak to the project team.

Detailed plans for the new public school and preschool are set out in the planning application, known as a Review of Environmental Factors (REF), which will be on public exhibition via the NSW Planning Portal from April 11 to May 9. Feedback will be considered as part of the REF process at the conclusion of the exhibition period.

The new primary school, preschool and high school for Wilton are part of the NSW Government's plan to rebuild public education after more than a decade of neglect by the Liberals and Nations, who failed to build much-needed schools in rapidly-growing suburbs.

The 2024-25 Budget is delivering record education funding, including $3.6 billion for new and upgraded schools in Western Sydney and $1.4 billion for new and upgraded schools in regional NSW. This targeted investment will ensure growing communities get access to a world-class public education.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Education and Early Learning Prue Car said:

“The NSW Government is expanding on our commitment to the growing Wilton community, by delivering a new public high school in addition to a new public school and preschool to meet the needs of local families.

“We've heard the concerns from the local community that a second public high school is needed for the region after years of neglect, and our Labor Government is committed to delivering it.

“This investment will allow Wilton families to be educated in their own local community from preschool right through to Year 12.”

Member for Wollondilly Judy Hannan said:

“This is an amazing outcome for the community of Wollondilly Shire who have waited for more than a generation for the promised second high school.

“I thank the Government for listening to my concerns and for delivering for the Wollondilly community. It is fantastic that we finally have the education facilities we deserve with new schools, primary and secondary to be delivered for my existing community along with the new residents that are choosing Wollondilly as their forever home.

“Thank you to the community who have been vocal in asking for this high school, with the many voices I was able to represent them and take their concerns to the Minister for Education and Premier who have listened and delivered for our community.”

Wilton Public School principal Debra Gray said:

“As our community continues to grow, so too does the demand for high quality education facilities. The announcement of a new public high school and primary school is a significant and welcomed investment in the future of our Wilton students and families.

“The construction of these schools will ease pressure on existing schools whilst ensuring that every child has access to the best possible learning environments which will provide much needed space, modern facilities and new opportunities for students to thrive.”
