New designs show upgrades for Parramatta public schools

Release date: 19 December 2024

The NSW Government is delivering upgrades at two Parramatta public schools, with new designs offering the community a first look at improvements to Dundas Public School and Northmead Public School, including new classrooms to replace long-term demountables.

New concept designs for upgrade works at Dundas Public School show improvements which will deliver six new classrooms, replacing all demountable classrooms at the school.

The upgrade will also deliver two multipurpose spaces and a covered walkway connecting the new building to the existing school.

Construction works will begin in the second half of 2025 with the upgrade due to be completed in mid-2026.

Upgrade works at Northmead Public School are also progressing, with new designs showing the project will deliver four new permanent classrooms, two special program rooms and refurbished administration and staff areas. The upgrades at Northmead Public School will also see the removal of all demountable classrooms at the school.

The Dundas Public School and Northmead Public School upgrades are two of several demountable replacement projects being delivered for school communities in rapidly growing parts of Western Sydney, with demountable classrooms currently being replaced with permanent classrooms at Girraween Public School, Darcy Road Public School, Matthew Pearce Public School, Castle Hill Public School, Carlingford West Public School and Cumberland High School.

As part of the NSW Government's plan to rebuild public education, the 2024-25 Budget includes a record $3.6 billion for building and upgrading schools in Western Sydney. This is part of our work to tackle the school infrastructure backlog left by the Liberals and Nationals, directing school funding where it is needed most.

Minister for Education and Early Learning and Minister for Western Sydney Prue Car said:

“I am pleased to see progress on these important public school upgrades for the Parramatta community.

“Removing demountable classrooms and improving the facilities at Dundas Public School and Northmead Public School is long overdue.

“These upgrades will ensure all students at these schools are learning in fit-for-purpose facilities.

“We are committed to ensuring all students in Western Sydney can access the best educational facilities, no matter where they live.”

Member for Parramatta Donna Davis said:

“It's great to see the new designs for these local public schools.

“For too long, students at Dundas Public School and Northmead Public School have been learning in temporary classrooms that simply are not fit for purpose.

“Replacing demountables with permanent classrooms will not only give these students an inspiring space to learn and grow but also provide our teachers with a better working environment.

“I cannot wait to see the upgrades take shape and I look forward to seeing students learning from these permanent facilities as soon as possible.”

Dundas Public School Principal Lesley Shipley said:

“It’s wonderful to see the final concept designs for the upgrade and to know that our students will soon benefit from these new permanent facilities.

“These upgrades will ensure our students have access to modern learning spaces designed to support their educational journey.

“The coming months will be an exciting time as further progress is made on our school upgrade and I can’t wait to see it take shape.”
