Construction nears completion on new Katoomba High School hall and multipurpose facility
Release date: 28 August 2024
Less than two years after being promised by the then Labor Opposition, works on Katoomba High School’s new multipurpose hall and sports facility are nearing completion, as the Minns Labor Government delivers on its election commitment.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Education and Early Learning Prue Car joined Member for Blue Mountains Trish Doyle and Principal of Katoomba High School Tess Devine to view ongoing works at the school. The project followed a strong community campaign led by local students.
Katoomba High School students have been using an aging gymnasium and school hall, which are too small to cater for netball or basketball games and cannot meet the school’s capacity requirements.
Once completed, the upgrade will deliver the school community new spaces for performing arts with back of house facilities, whole-of-school events, along with a new school hall with stage, a large indoor sports court and toilets and change rooms.
The upgrade works are expected to be completed and ready for the whole school presentation evening in early December 2024, providing an opportunity for all year groups to get together and enjoy the new space.
An air-conditioning upgrade is also currently underway at the school, installing reverse cycle air-conditioning in classrooms.
These upgrade works are part of the Minns Labor Government’s record $8.9 billion investment to continue to deliver a massive pipeline of new and upgraded schools across NSW, after more than a decade of neglect by the Liberals and Nationals. This ongoing investment in local communities will ensure all students can access high-quality schools, no matter their postcode.
Minister for Education and Early Learning Prue Car said:
“I am pleased to see the new multipurpose facility coming to life at Katoomba High School.
“Once completed, this space will be an exciting new space for the Katoomba High School community to play sport, dance, act and learn.
“The local community campaigned for this new facility, and I know we will see it become a much-loved community asset.”
Member for the Blue Mountains Trish Doyle said:
“It is wonderful to see works on Katoomba High School’s new multi-purpose facility well underway.
Once completed later this year, this facility will give our students a modern learning environment and set our community up for the future.”
Principal of Katoomba High School Tess Devine said:
“I am thrilled to see the new hall taking shape. Students and staff are looking forward to utilising the space for all-weather sporting activities, next-level creative performances and large-scale learning opportunities that we have never been able to accommodate.
“It will allow us to host interschool sporting competitions, as well as becoming a hub for our local primary schools as part of the Upper Blue Mountains Learning Community.”
